I was told it's durian trees blooming season now, meaning it's durian flowers collecting season too! I drove out as early as 6.40am, dropped by Iban market behind Sg. Merah main market hoping to buy durian flowers. Nope, I didn't see any yet.

By 7.00am, the sun was well up. I woke up as the first ray of sun came over the horizon, and a thought of a little time for morning walk would be nice. The cloudy skies however gave me a thought it might rain soon.

Instead, "as the sun goes up, the sky above us looks bright blue".

At around noon, I looked out through the sliding glass doors and realised the different in the colour of the sky. Out of curiosity, I walked out to take a look and saw the smoke hovering the sky, my thought went, 'oh my goodness, whose house is on fire?'
None of us would think of, it's got to do with open burning as it's an offence under section 29A or 29B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and is a compoundable offence. But rather, as I asked around most of us felt for the fire victims and hoped there be no casualties or loss of life in the fire incident.

By 4.00pm, the smoke didn't seem to abate but instead getting thicker and covered half of Sibu sky. By then, I began to have a feeling that's not house on fire, it would've been forest fire but won't take suspicious that it was done by someone clearing farm.

By 5.00pm, the sun peeking through the smoke covered sky. The smoke billowed from across, obscuring the sun at afternoon. As I was driving home, I was hoping to find the answer to the fire.

Thick black smoke blocking the sun.
No one knew about the fire, so I thought I will just have to wait until the next day for the news to find out the answer.
The early morning Chinese Newspaper did not say anything about the fire which is weird as they normally would be the first to unveiled the first details. I grabbed a copy of the Borneo Post on my way and found nothing was mentioned either. Not until I was at a grocery store to get some groceries that I saw on the front page of a Malay newspaper reading, 'Pembakaran Terbuka, Satu Pencemaran' (Air pollution from open burning) with a big picture of thick black smoke hovered over Sibu town.
OMG! "wild fire" as a certain big company was burning the land in preparation for planting oil palm. Read more on Rubber Seeds>>
