Streetside Vendors

"Quick! Hand me my handbag", said the mother to her daughter after I handed her RM10 for a plate of RM2 'Jambu Air' (rose apples?) while her other hand was busy sliding batter coated bananas into the wok.

The smell of banana fritters was tempting. I restrained from buying after giving into consideration that I've had fritters 3 days in a row.

As usual, by 2 - 3pm every afternoon, the parking lots area in front of a row of shophouses allocated for the Sg. Merah street vendors by Sibu Municipla Council will be taken, some even reserved their space as early as 1pm by putting an empty basket or a stool marking their territory and blocking the parking space.

Business started gradually till sunset with more stalls set up and vendors coming with their green groceries, finger food and fast food one after another until the stretch of road can be seen has filled up.

By parking their vehicles nearby, they'd load their freshly collected jungle produce of the day.

Here is where you will usually get what we often refer to as 'village dishes'. Ranging from bidin, paku-pakis, bamboo shoots, pumpkins, wild vegetables like wild cucumbers, wild pea eggplants, preserved river fish, preserved wild boar meat to finger food like fritters and homemade cakes.

Interestingly, goods are measured according to 'per-plate' instead of using weighing scales thus you'll get, RM1 or RM2 for a plate of manggo and so fort.
