In Irish house and farm, the cock was treated with great respect. This is because he was believed to have the power to dispel the power of the supernatural or the other world with his first crow at dawn.

But at our neighbouring area, as soon as the sun can be seen on the horizon, roosters at our neighbour house compound crow continuously one after another crowing into mid-day.

I spied on them one morning through one of the tinted glass windows.

It seems so obviously that our neighbour is into gamecocks or blood sports which is illegal in most of the world, but exceptions exist. There were about 15 gamecocks with a triangle hut each separating them from one another.

As the cocks crow often with incessant clucking and crowing, a friend called one day and in the middle of the conversation, she asked me a quizzical question 'why do I sound like I'm in a chicken barnyard'.

The male chickens make certain clucking noises when they find food to attracts female chickens.

Intruder alert, funny thing is I find the whole bunch of them making alarm calls when scared by an intruder.
