Earth Hour

Some things look better in the dark. Like the earth, at 8:30pm, on March 28th.

"Earth Hour is being touted as a showdown between Earth and global warming: The blacker the night on March 28th, the more clearly the world will have shown their awareness of the issue... by not showing anything at all. Last night we switched off our lights to fight global warming!"

We switched off our lights.

As the intense lights from energy saving light bulbs above us took several seconds to slowly fade away, I did several camera tricks as an illustration of our hot planet.

An hour then seemed moving rather very slow... it was dark, so quiet, we can only hear the ceiling clock ticking as it ticks from 60 minutes... 65, 55 and so on.

Well, living in this part of the world where blackouts are common that usually occurs uninformed, we have had frequent blackouts before and unlike most major cities around, a blackout usually causes havoc and complains.

In the early days during the 80s, as a child we had frequent blackouts that sometimes went on for hours. In those days, you don't hear people of Sarawak whining a lot about power blackouts. We were like, 'we used to it already', and had lived in a town where power supply came from a noisy fuel running power station, I can still remember it was located somewhere near Nyelong River before it was finally shut down and being replaced by 33kv power in around 90s.

As we were trying to create an awareness to my nephews last night after they've asked what is Earth Hour and without apparent forethought, we participated in the earth hour by switching off the main lights in the hall.

Doing our bit by giving the Earth an hour off! Well, the children were not that too excited. Although had explains the earth is heating up.

Before that one hour is up, we had our lights, TV and aircond back again as usual.
